Chrome extensions have an amazing history. Not too long ago, it was still possible to create custom extensions for Chrome for any app. Since then, extensions have become much more complicated to create. For example, you now need to use the Chrome Web Store to create an extension for the chrome browser.
The idea is to give users the ability to create a new extension that allows them to run their own web browser application. The process is very similar to writing a script for the Firefox extension.
The truth is, I don’t think the Chrome extension was ever simpler or more complicated. Not to mention, the Chrome developers made it easy, so anyone who wanted to could do it.
The reason why Chrome is so complicated is because the chrome devs wanted to add the ability to create extensions. It’s why they included the Chrome Web Store. Now anyone can create extensions for their browser, but that’s not the same as creating a Chrome extension. So instead of having to write a script and be able to link to the chrome developer’s site, anyone could just type in “chrome developer’s site” and there it is.
Chrome and other web browsers have had a number of extensions for years. Now they’ve added the ability to display extensions. They still use the chrome extensions, but they’re no longer the only web browser that is supported by the developers. It’s only a matter of time before you’ll see the extensions themselves appearing.
